Penny For Your Thoughts

If I had a penny for every time I said I loved thee,
I'd be dwelling in opulence and luxury.
If I had a dollar for every time I loved as I said,
I--with Lazarus--would eat after the dogs had fed.

So I keep company with the wealthy man?
And yet Lazarus and I share the beggar's can?
Would that the thought granted me any consolation
Rather than adding to eternal frustration.

For in reality I fit but half the analogy.
The wealth I would bequeath myself is imaginary;
Ah, but the poverty - that I possess in abundance.
So in the end, what will be my recompense?
