Smile More Deeply

There are those who have loved and lost
A husband who before them crossed
To his everlasting place of rest
Leaving shattered heart within their breast

What once was a family complete
With warmth, laughter and love replete
Is now but a hollow fractured shell
Where sorrow settled determined to dwell

But hark! You have refused to succumb
To the pain-induced destroying numb
For though saddened and saddled with sorrow
You refused to surrender tomorrow

And so you steeled your grieving heart
Piecing together tatters torn apart
That in time you'd be sufficiently healed
That the living grief could be concealed

Now you smile and smile more deeply
For the smile is more dear which comes not cheaply
You have a special place in this heart of mine
On this glorious day of St. Valentine
