A collaboration with Barbara Demasson who patiently endured my slow, plodding efforts and my "particular" ideas for how things ought be. Thanks, Barbara! :o)

Davenoor

The winnowing winds of Davenoor
Trace gently through the heathered moor
Slowly rising, the sleepy moon
Spills half-lit beams on sea and dune

And not a creature to be seen
Upon this island stage serene
But hark! Not all is, as it seems
For shadows hide mystic beings

In cozy beds of eider-down
They do not stir or make a sound
On mosses soft, in slumber's care
They dream of charms and potions rare

Immortal servants of the moon
For with its setting they must swoon
And never the sun's rays traverse
Victims of a primeval curse

In ages past, by plan divine
These fairies crafted their design
Devising earth and sun's first light
And a luminary for the night

Amidst the splendor, evil trod
Spawning the deeds of wicked gods
Their envy hot as flames from hell
As they conjured a binding spell

"Gods of creation, we use our powers
To bind you to the darkest hours
We steal the beauty of the day
In darkness you'll forever stay"

But now the rousing moon rides high
Softly silvering summer sky
She drizzles energizing light
To summon every slumbering sprite

Now awakened, they rise and flex
So feather weight and effortless
To be adorned in flowing wisps
Of gauzy threads, the spiders' gifts

As time's two hands at twelve converge
From secret alcoves they emerge
These dainty creatures of the dark
On magic missions shall embark

With silent steps as light as air
They gather flowers for their hair
Rich colored petals, fragrant still
Entwine their locks; soft silken spill

With wind swept wings in hasty flight
They soar and flutter to new heights
The tiny, graceful forms take wing
To gather at the fairy rings

Between the slender stalks of green
On mushroom stools, beneath moonbeams
Bewitching beings with magic powers
Test revered spells in darkened hours

With hands adjoined and circle strong
They rally against the ancient wrong
Softly chanting incantations
Trying countless combinations

Striving to find one to reverse
The evil gods' primordial curse
And wake to see the earth by day
As a thousand year curse fades away

But until they find the exact spell
These fairies that in darkness dwell
Will sleep by day forever more
Upon the shores of Davenoor
